Reverse Engineering

Dunno if it's been discussed before...but a Reverse Engineering skill would be nice, no?

For example, being able to break an object back down to its original parts (strawberry back into cherry, etc)...at a cost, of course.

If it's possible and I don't know about it...care to enlighten me?

  • I could see it for things like turning elements back into rocks or tools back into ingots. Fruit would help pack space with an energy cost.

  • You said it! I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to turn compounds back into elements so I can make new compounds!

  • One of the most interesting ideas I have heard!

  • @Thrindos I'd recommend not making compounds unless you need them for a specific powder.

    Also, +1.

  • It would be neat if certain ingredients or elements were only obtainable through this method.
What materials would reverse engineering Butterfly Lotion yield? Butterfly seeds perhaps.
Five blue snow cones reverse engineered might provide enough blue paint to cover the exterior of a small house.

What about reverse engineering livestock? Could we use the resulting biological material to create new life forms? A pet falcon that could be ridden might be convenient.
All those music blocks could be reverse engineered and re-engineered into....

  • Definitely should be possible, but not just one global reverse-engineering skill. Different reverse-engineering skills for different things, like turning crops into seeds, drinks into fruits, and so forth.

  • +1 to RobotGymnast
Several skills for different purposes would make the skill tree bigger, what may be needed for the release of the game

  • Looking back at one of the very earliest versions of the skill tree, we had, in with the alchemy skills:

    • Standard Fission & Division (the flip side of Intermediate Admixing; requires Alchemy; allows breaking down compounds into elements)
    • Advanced Decomposition (breaking down powders, potions, crystals, metals, etc. into compounds and elements or other constituents)
    • Discombobulatory Recycling (ability to break down almost any higher level item — food, tools, etc. into usable, recombinant components)

It is likely that all those will eventually get added :)
