Are all groups secret?

Is the only way to find out about a group, other than its name, to join it?

Some people (like me) don't like exclusivity&secrecy.

  • Nevermind that we're all exclusive and secret testers. :) The only other way with closed groups for now is to ask around and find a member.

    Different strokes for different folks.

  • Ha! Yeah, nevermind that.

All group discussions appear closed to non-members. Even the ones that say anyone can join. Is that just a setting groups choose?

  • I started a group and I don't see a setting to make discussions or members public yet, just create new types of members.

  • I can see discussions, but maybe it's cuz I'm an admin or I joined them ages ago. Kinda sounds like a bug.

  • No dev ever replied to this post. The idea of joining a group whose membership is hidden (even when the group is open to everyone) disturbs me. Will groups always be structured in this way?

  • The way groups are set up now, unless you join the group you cannot see the members or the posts within the group. It's easy to join and leave the group though - so not a huge barrier to access.

However … there is talk of a possible change to the way groups work. Nothing concrete yet, but stay tuned … more on this soon.

  • "It's easy to join and leave the group though"

Well, it would be if it weren't for "You're already in max groups."...

  • Thanks jdawg. I'm not totally unaware of my tendency to occupy the extreme position.

  • Thank you :) The "max groups" makes for some hard decisions... and serial group-joining. I feel like a weirdo when I join and leave one group after another.

BUT: Since there's no "public" text description, the only way to find out more about a group is to join it... and since we have a hard limit, I can't stay in the groups I've already joined if I want to explore further.

  • I always keep a group slot open so that if I want to look at a group I can just join and immediately leave.

  • Me too, but I feel bad because I know all my friends will get a notification saying I joined the group, and they can't tell whether I stayed even after they join it themselves.
