Have a "mailbox" in front of your house

... where anyone can drop items off, but only you can pick it up? I would totally pay over 1999c for this.

  • This is a great idea, and I bet we see this in the game before too long.

  • eglantine, great idea! Can't wait to see it happen. +20 XD

  • i was going to say that you can already do this using auctions, but then I realized that only really works synchronously.

a mailbox would allow you to securely transfer an item
to someone not currently online. awesome idea.

  • A mailslot on the front door may make it a little cleaner.
    options
    - knock on door
    - leave items
    - paint house
    - tp the trees

  • I'd much rather prefer 'Drop Off' points on certain streets, where you can select one of your friends and 'drop off' an item or two for them. Then, the recipient goes to one of these drop of points and collects their item(s). It saves having to go to their house, which would be irritating if you're in a different part of the world & make player-to-player trading possible even if you're on either sides of a map. :)

  • Sounds like having a post office box. :)

  • Tingly, you forgot:

    -flaming bag of poo

    How about carrier animals?

  • What if you put it in the mailbox at your property and it's Pig-Expressed to the recipient's mailbox? Heh, that'd be funny to see delivery pigs galloping on their way, but really just auto-delivered when you deposit it in your mailbox.

Unique character names would be needed, cuz I wouldn't just mail people on my friends list.

  • And then, a Glitch Postman job? :D
Posted 12 years ago by Cefeida Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Woot @jdawg :)

And Tingly's idea of Pig-Express and galloping delivery pigs literally made me laugh out loud!

  • I decided I like hburger's idea best, cuz you'd never have to go far to mail or get items. Have a little mailbox icon pop up on your screen when someone sends you something. Street spirits could work as the mailboxes: buy, sell, mail options.
Posted 12 years ago by Tingly Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I'd rather not refer to the system as 'mail' or 'mailbox' just because of the implications that has - delays, waiting, real life etc. This would be instantaneous - I like 'Drop Off' points or similar.

  • delivery? transfer? some synonym. I suppose the rock could do it since they handle teleporting, too. They could ask if you wanna teleport yourself or items, energy loss for either. A skill needs to be learned with that version.
Posted 12 years ago by Tingly Subscriber! | Permalink
  • the item teleport that's learned as part of the teleportation skill is probably the way to go, and the energy loss makes sense.

it would be cool if instead of just being able to teleport items to other people, you could also teleport the items into their home or into your own home in order to clear your bag.

  • +1.

The mailman idea is great too, have him walking around, stopping at mailboxes with stuff in them, even if it's just for show.

love the mail box idea :)

  • I assume we can put notes in it. This is sweet!

  • lol, that mailbox animation kind of reminds me of a PSA on how to spot botulism in cans.

I hope all this awesome stuff we keep stumbling on is up and running by the next reset!

  • I would like to bring this post up again.  I think it is a great idea (surprise gift-giving, leave previously agreed stuff, etc).  Not least since when we go into beta, we could well be playing for more days (and nights) than we have have until now, and with time zone differences and Real Life (not to mention sleep) "interference" I think a mail box would be a very helpful addition.

Leaving a note with your "input" only possible if you have Penpersonship I + paper, of course.

  • Love the mailbox idea +1 or even the idea of a "post office" located near Bureaucratic Hall. Maybe also a "Trading Post" where you could meet up with people and swap items. I know there is the auction, but you need money for that. Trading would not require money.
Posted 12 years ago by Holly Waterfall Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You can trade items with people though...or do you mean from different locations? That could be handy especially with projects and I'm pretty sure there's a thread about it somewhere.
Posted 12 years ago by Gabi Subscriber! | Permalink
  • You could even have an @glitch.com mailing address?
Posted 12 years ago by Unah Subscriber! | Permalink
  • The danger with the ability to trade with people directly is that it opens the game to abuse of people selling stuff for real cash. As long as it is somewhat difficult to deliver goods, it will put a damper on it. Mailbox would be great. Drop of points seem like they could get dangerous.

Of course, there is nothing stopping people from settling up a delivery service themselves.... 10% or whatever you are delivering.

  • Please make this happen "soon". :) A mailbox is a way to make interacting and neighborhood community building much more accessible to new players, solo players, shy folks and non-joiner types as well.  It adds a whole new dimension to the game. It's so much fun to see what people have left for you while you were out. I love the ideas shared about new items specifically for delivery as well as tying delivery into the game via quests and skills. Delivery pigs! LOL  A new skill level in AK!

  • Is there any way that the gnome outside of a person's house could be given items to hold for its owner? That could include notes written on paper, so it could function like a mail box. I do think it would be kind of neat for each different zone to have its own post office like most zones have subway stops. That would save the note or item sender from having to venture to some out-of-the way place to deliver a note, but perhaps the mail could also be delivered only at the beginning of each new in-game day.

  • I have often wished my gnome could be a mailbox.  And that I could re-name notes to gnotes.
Posted 12 years ago by Nanookie Subscriber! | Permalink
  • yea the mailbox would be great-- a simple, drop off, or a more complicated system would be wonderful-- ive played games where you could mail items, and mailing yourself items Would make "moving" and the moving/losing items problem obsolete, and moving in general alot easier for people... Though-- that may take up too much resources for a more complex system, a simple buy a mailbox, set it outside your house/receive mail by people dropping it off would also be just wonderful.
Posted 12 years ago by blackwidow Subscriber! | Permalink
  • the mail system could work like the auction house.....  send/receive from wherever you are, you just need to address who it's going to
Posted 12 years ago by Karikitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • I really like the idea of a mail system for sending stuff to people.

  • I like the idea of having a mailbox, free standing, attached to a gnome,or simply a slot in the front door, somewhere secure*,where only the intended recipient can pick it up. It's a nice way to keep in touch and let friends know you've thought of them, esp when you have friends who live in different time zones.
(*can people still enter other players' homes and pick up stuff/harvest crops/trees/pets?)

  • I received a lovely note in the last test, but the sender had to leave it laying on the ground.
++++ to mailboxes.. or the gnome holding onto things until the home owner returns to collect them.

  • hmmm,I wonder why I suddenly think it'd be nice to have a pet snail? Snails could be harvested and give slime, which could be used for alchemy formulas (beakers, test tubes).

  • I vote for a mailbox in front of the house where I personally go and drop things off. I've been leaving gifts/notes for my new neighbours but I don't want to leave anything big on the ground because any random person could walk past and pick it up before my neighbour gets it. And I wouldn't want to have to send it in the post because, to be honest, I don't remember the names of all my neighbours.

  • I vote mailbox in front of house. When I sign on I am in my house. I want to walk outside and check my mail! I think it would be so much fun to be able to write my friends. Send cards, gifts, get well, thank you's.....

  • If 5 months ago is "before too long" jdawg, how long is "after too long?" :D
Posted 12 years ago by Essie Kitten Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Well... we know too long is at least 6 mos, if 5 is before then :P So how much do you think jdawg lost on the bet?
Posted 12 years ago by Travinara Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Would not like to bet, Trav (will miss you:-)

But could something please be done about this? .. The more/longer we are open, the more it is needed - in some way/form  ... we do not all live in the same time zone, we do not all adhere to the same "work day", sleep cycle, etc.

The long and short of the matter is, we would like some way of keeping in touch with our friends - even when they are off-line "right now". Please, give us that opportunity!

  • This is an awesome idea that I fully support. Would be great to be able to leave folks stuff or notes in a secure location when they are offline. + 1000 What Middle Aged said. Another option would be to add the feature to the gnomes.
