I'm from the Mitten (aka Michigan :) ), not sure if we have a lot of salamanders - or where they're most common if we do have some. There's a lake in my neighborhood, but I've never seen one down there.

I wonder if it is too cold there? let me look...You DO have them!! "...hidden under forest soils and leaf litter, or (in the case of Mudpuppies and Sirens) on the bottoms of ponds, lakes, or streams." Look here, if you like www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607...

Huh, then I guess they must just be really good at hiding because I don't remember ever seeing one. Thanks for the info and link, I'll have to check that out! :)
