Goodnight, Groddle

I think that when the game goes away, all of our little world is asleep and waits for us till we come back again.

So I wrote this lullaby.  It's based on a song from my alma mater called "The Goodnight Song."
I hope it makes some of you happy too.  I like thinking that Ur is gently dreaming.

=================
Lay your picks and scrapers down,
Catch the fading evenlight,
Butterflies rest in the fruit trees
as we sing to Ur, "good night."

Fireflies glimmer, glimmer 'round all
Shimla Mirch and back to you
Bearing sparks from all the Glitchen
Cosma, Tii and Friendly too.

To be woven in our dreaming
Good night Groddle, good night.

  • As soon as this spread around the office, there was a movement to put it in as a replacement for the trumpets as a game shutdown song. In fact, eager engineers went ahead and did it. But, we should ask: Lelu, can we have your permission to do that? And, if so, would you mind if we added an accompaniment?

  • Beautiful. That would be a wonderful way to end a test.
    Posted 13 years ago by Piece of Serenity Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Oh my goodness, stoot, I would be honored if you used it.
    <blush />

    I have a small concern about copyright issues, only in that I don't know the status of the original tune that I used for inspiration from my college (it was in my head and this was what happened!) For my own use as a private project, I didn't think it posed a practical problem. But I would not want to cause any issues for Tiny Speck. I would be happy to help with that. (IANAL, so maybe I'm worried over nothing!)

  • Aww this is so sweet!  Beautiful voice!  This would make Glitch end on a much sweeter note (I have never actually been around when Glitch ended, but I am sure its pretty bitter for those who love to play so much)

  • Lelu — it sure sounds like a traditional melody. If so, it'd long out of copyright. If we're wrong and we hear different, we'll do what the owner wants ;)

    And a big CONGRATS to you  (and how awesome for us!!!) for it being included in the game!!

  • Beautiful, Lelu!

    @stoot - the original poem that the melody seems based on has been around since 1905 - though I am glad that Mount Holyoke changed the words for their own purpose.  The original words kind of take the magic out it (Don't follow link if you are easily offended, as 1905 mentality is in action): bit.ly/iUZCaF

  • Yikes! Yeoman, never heard that one. Thankfully, times change!

    sgjo, it is, in fact, awesome. :) I will tell a story because somehow it seems appropriate. I gave up on music, and other things, 20 years ago because I didn't believe in myself. I had a college classmate who became a professional opera soloist. Everything I tried, she was there first and was beautiful and perfect. I felt like a mudskipper next to her.

    Now I think maybe life can be tough enough without you beating yourself up too.

    This is a lullaby from my heart and it's for all of you.
