Increase "hi" range for return greetings to full street

OK, this is driving me crazy. I am finding it extremely difficult to return "hi" greetings unless the other player waits around or I try to chase them down. I'm usually mining, gathering, or chatting in global and by the time I've got the focus back on the game window or menus closed so I can hit the 5-key the player is long gone and I feel like a jerk... again. I hardly ever manage to actually return a "hi" if the player is moving. I thought this was supposed to be a friendly, casual thing and instead it's making me really stressed out.

Please increase the range of return "hi" greetings so that if you get a "hi", you can return it from anywhere on the street, or at least a considerably greater range.
