Cultural backgrounds of Glitchers?

I'm curious. Are there any Blacks here? African-Americans? Africans? People of the former nations in America, or anywhere else? Latinos? Asians? Arabs? Europeans? People from the former Soviet Union? Catholics? Buddhists? Muslims? Hindus? Other people in other religions besides Christian? Canadians? People from poor white cultures? Other people from anywhere outside of the (formerly) privileged classes of the US?

(Never said I didn't like it. Proud of the D. But the sheer number of people who have asked which gang I was in, or how many people I've shot/cars I've stolen...ridic.)

  • Oh... that's too bad. Kinda like Detroit, myself... maybe partly due to my attraction to dilapidated buildings and urban exploration (not a drop of sarcasm there, either).

  • Ferond, you may be interested in investigating the national/cultural groups here on Glitch

India, Japan, Romani, French, Vietnam, Malta, Dutch, Singapore, Columbia, Nordic, Puerto Rico, UK (London and Bristol), Russia, Canada, Caribbean, Australian (plus Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne), Brazil, Austria, Spain, South East Asia, Romania, Swiss, German, Peru, Latin America, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Argentina, Mexico, New Zealand, Estonia, Poland, Chinese, Serbia, Bulgaria,

And you are aware, of course, that the TS offices in Vancover house about half the TS staff who are Japanese, Estonian, Canadian, and multiple other languages and cultures.  Check out some of the street names to see how these have been incorporated into Glitch itself.

  • White, of half-Polish/Ukrainian peasant, half-indeterminate-Western-European ancestry. (The former half fled pogroms shortly before WWII; the latter half came to the US during colonial times as indentured servants.) Brought up Jewish; currently agnostic.

  • My father was from the German Swiss Amish and Mennonite town of Berne, Indiana. My mother grew up in Kendallville, Indiana, and I think she had mostly German ancestors but I'm not sure.

I'm a follower of Baha'u'llah, a member of the Baha'i Faith, and a plainclothes born-again Christian. By that I mean I gave my life to Christ, and I see my life as Christ-centered, but I don't wear the uniform of popular born-again Christianity.

I've also spent time with pagans, and started exploring pagan and Native American paths for a while, but that's on hold for now.

The reason I didn't answer the question in the beginning was because I was classifying myself as a WASP, and I already know that there are WASPS here. I forgot about my non-WASP religious status.

  • A Commonwealth kid, mostly a mix of English and Irish, with a bit of Scots and Welsh thrown in. Both British and Canadian citizenship. I'm a lapsed druid. Raised by athiests--got all the Catholic guilt without the religion (but that's a story for another day).

ETA: Further on the side of cultural outlook, I come from a family of night-owl, suffering-poet basement children. We're all mistaken zygotes--parents included:

You’ve never heard of that? Well see, the Zygote Fairy was flying over your hometown one night, and all the little zygotes in her basket were hopping and jumping with excitement. You were indeed destined for parents who would have understood you, but the Zygote Fairy hit turbulence and, oops, you fell out of the basket over the wrong house. You fell head over heels, head over heels, right into a family that was not meant for you. Your “real” family was three miles farther on.- Clarissa Pinkola Estés

  • I am half Latina. My birthfather was white (he passed away in 2003) and his lineage is from Scotland and England. I have a grandfather way back on his side of the family who was actually a Founding Father of the United States. My mother is Puerto-Rican, and my abuela and abuelo emigrated from Puerto Rico in the late 1940's. I have a great-great-great grandmother on the Puerto-Rican side of my family who was from Spain. I am a Christian, but my views are pretty different from the "traditional" Pentecostal Christian. I fully believe in the concept that Biblical principles need to be understood within the context during which they were written. I do support gay marriage and even if I didn't, it's not my right to judge any person who lives in any kind of lifestyle whatsoever - that's not the job that's been delegated to me. My job is to show Love through all my words and actions.

And I need to hush because I'm rambling because I'm drunk. Yay, Shiraz. Might come back to this when I'm sober XD

  • I'm boring and white, but my Robots are of all the various colors of metal, from silver to rusty, including copper and brass.  They don't discriminate.  We all live together on the Orbiting Laboratory, and with the occasional exception of invading an unsuspecting planet, we live in peace.

  • Polish, born under martial law, raised in socialism, then in capitalism, then abroad in Ireland, then back in Poland again. My dad's family comes from the Austrian/Prussian partitions, I know I have Tyrolean ancestors... my mum's family comes from the South but we're not entirely sure what the background is there. Poland used to be its own little cultural melting pot once.

  • I'm a Eurasian Mutt.
Dutch, Sri Lankan, Hungarian, French, Portuguese and probably a whole bunch of other things.
Earliest ancestors I could trace back were Dutch sailors and they went all over the world mostly spice trading, and they spawned as they went lol

My parents are both very white, but I look more like my Sri Lankan grandfather, so in the summer I look Asian and in the Winter, once my tan fades a little, I get told I look Italian.

But just to add to the confusion, I'm English. Because I was born in England and have lived here a fair bit of my life lol   Apart from a few "Oh you speak English very well!" ... thank you... so do you?, moments, it's all good xD

It's kind of odd as nobody on my dad's side of the family quite fits a certain stereotype of how they should look in relation to what their parents looked like.
My paternal grandfather, who had white parents, was brown skinned with one blue and one green eye.
My dad who had brown parents ended up white skinned with brown eyes.
The skin colour seems to switch every generation lol  And the eye thing's quite cool. Some of my grandfathers kids got green eyes and some brown.  I kind of wish I got the green ones, as I do quite like green eyes, but I'll settle for the brown eyes I got.
My sister's brown skinned, but her kids are white.  So when they grow up and have kids, they'll probably be brown.

As for religion, I have no religion. I moved around a lot when I was younger and met so many different people from different cultures and religions, that I found it impossible to pick a religion that could be 'the right one'. I didn't like thinking that "Maybe this entire group of my friends could be 'wrong' for believing what they do" as that just seemed a horrible thing to think, so I ended up being nothing, as it seemed a more friendly sort of option for my situation.
The rest of my family are all very much Christian.
I don't dislike any religions though, or think any are wrong, I'd rather believe in the good parts of all religions and ignore the parts I'm not keen on.
I'd pick and choose from all and create my own religion if I had more motivation, but I'm lazy lol

  • I'm on the U.S. West Coast. My father was posted in France and Belgium during WWII and afterward moved here from Illinois to find work. My ancestral heritage is English-Irish-Scottish--with perhaps one mystery ingredient mixed in to explain Fa's near-black hair, dark brown eyes and olive complexion that tanned to a lovely berry brown. Mum was a fair-skinned brunette with cornflower blue eyes. I'm even paler than Mum was, have green eyes and was born with bright red-gold hair, but it darkened over time to a medium brown. Somehow, ahem, with the passing years I've become a blonde.

  • Full-blooded Vietnamese (as far as I know), born in France, raised and living in Australia. I'm agnostic and Buddhist but not particularly religious, unlike my parents (who have converted their bedroom into a shrine and sleep in the living room). I have trouble believing in things: just about every religion I've learnt about makes me think "well, that's completely illogical". The only reason I'm not completely non-religious is because I've been raised as Buddhist, so it stuck.
I know nothing about my dad's side of the family aside from the fact that my grandpa was a commander in the Navy or something. I've heard more about my mum's side: apparently they were political activists and stuff. I've also heard from my mum that I'm part royalty, but I still don't know how that works.
