My chickens refuse to acknowledge the stick. I keep setting the rogues free but every time I log in, new chickens have discovered their stick-freedom!

You have the radius set too tight. Chickens get out when the radius is set too tight for them all to flap at the same time. Not sure if it's a bug or by design, but relax their radius a little and they'll all stay with the stick.
