Gardening and broken hoes

Two problems with gardening and hoes this weekend:

1. my hoe broke, but nothing in the gardening display lets me know that happened.

2. I had two hoes. The second one is ignored by the gardening interaction (not so for other uses, where it just switches hoes.

I guess the first one is not a "bug", but the second one is.
