NPC and streets crossings

Usually I take a short cut and click on the next street crossing sign, instead of using my arrows to move forward. If I click on the next street sign when I enter a street; I do not stop walking when the crab asks me to play a song. Even if I go back, the crab ignores me.  So a) sometimes I end up with one or more headphones in my inventory which I cannot drop and b) I miss the opportunity to sing for the crab.

This happened with Rube too. I went back but rube is gone.

We cannot predict NPC interactions when we enter a street. I do not know if this is a bug or the desired functionality. Since the game has very few auto NPC interactions it will be nice to have a choice to stop.
