skill based gameplay

Will there ever be any, or is this the same old formula of do stuff, level up do stuff, repeat.

Quake3 and games like QuakeLive are great because there is skill that makes you want to keep playing to get better, not just keep playing to get a higher level or better stuff.

Having skill based mini games for leveling or even races would be great fun opportunities and would introduce a much needed skill to the game.

  • I'm not sure if there will be any, but I wouldn't mind seeing some.

Maybe those games can take the form of pop-out games like gardening is now, only a little more skill based, like you said. ^^

The result in that game could have some effect in world. Maybe you can get an item or something. I don't think these skill based games should have any effect on the timed skill system though. I think the "harder" stuff should be optional to make the game accessible to a wider, more casual audience.

  • I like the idea of mini games. It's a nice way to get people to socialize. Events could be held even.

  • I think minigames might do the opposite of getting people to socialize if everyone's off in their own little game trying to beat some high score, wouldn't it? o.o

  • Maybe we wouldn't need the minigames to be distinct from the main world? I agree with Dryea that private rooms aren't that conducive to socialising (or learning how to play the games - it's nice to watch other people first). And Puzzle Pirates was frustrating from that point of view, for me at least.

I was thinking that I'd like moving around the world to involve more than just walking/jumping (can't teleport yet), and that I enjoyed the platforming bits when I came across them, even without the quoins. Maybe there could just be fun parts of the word we could parkour on, or watch while other people do neat things. Not games to win, but bits of the world to play on. I like getting jumps right much more than I like getting points for it.

Or, you know, a moonwalking skill for looking fly while running along streets. Or breakdancing. Or a two-minute turfing bonus.

  • Mini-games don't have to be played solo.
