Flaming root-vegetables as an effect of distance:

So, here's my new theory. ALL of the giant root-vegetable houses are on fire ALL the time, but as you get closer or further away, the flames become invisible. At a distance of... oh, let's say one street, the tops appear to be on fire. But the root-vegetables beyond the fog-line are not, and the ones right next to me are not.

When I walk the street that runs parallel to this one, THOSE trees, now up-close, will appear to be non-flaming, and this tree I'm standing in front of will be both blackened and on fire.

SCIENCE!
