• Mine rock. Then crush is with the Grinder. Tada! You have elements. Dullite and beryl give red, blue, green. Shiny gives shiny and the other colours.

• mined metal gives metal chunks which you turn into ingots via smelting.
  
  so if you want elements, stay away from metal and stick with the rocks hburger mentioned.
  
  i mention this only because someone was confused about it in help chat yesterday.
