NationStates: let's create a community

Someone suggested NationStates to me, and after a couple days of playing it I really love it.
At first glance, it is completely different from Glitch.  Yet I think it is great and that a lot of you would enjoy it too.  It's basically a game where you develop your own nation by answering a couple policy questions a day.  You also can participate in regional and international politics (it has the equivalent of an U.N.) It's benefits are that:

1)  It would be incredibly easy to create a little Glitch community in it.  You choose a region to live in.  I have created a Glitch region that we could all move our nations to.  (If you join NationStates, please move to the Glitch region, become a world assembly member and endorse The Republic of Isalenoria, my nation.)

2) No graphics will be as beautiful or as fun to interact with as those of Glitch.  Looking at most other games has made me sad, because all I can focus on is what the graphics lack in whimsy and character compared to Glitch.  Since Nationstates is text-based, I'm not reminded so much of what I am missing.

3) Maybe it's just me, but... I love, breathe, eat politics.  I love getting to shape my own nation and look forward to making a splash in regional and international politics in Nationstates soon.

4) The creator of NationStates has a great sense of humour that permeates the daily policy questions you will answer.

If this sounds like the game for you, once you have created an account be sure to move to the region Glitch, become a world assembly member, and endorse the Republic of Isalenoria (so I can be the delegate and attend to regional matters ;).

  • If anyone's confused, Cephalophoria and I are the same player. I've always wanted to play a game like this!  I'm really glad to finally find a promising one online.  Definitely no Glitch, but the laid back pace of it really fits my schedule these days.

  • 'k. i'm in.

it looks lie at least an interesting place to put sown some roots while we figure out the diaspora.

i've always kind of dreamed of having my own country.

maybe i will change it from a republic to a benevolent dictatorship. if your state is small enough, there's little difference between the two.

  • Found the Wikipage writeup about NationStates for those who wish to read more about it.  This sounds like an intriguing second game for me to alternate with Kingdom of Loathing that I've been playing for around 3 years.  The fact that NationStates has been around for over 10 years despite some "glitches" along the way is a good sign for it's continued stability, although it seems to be dependent on the ability of the creator (Max Barry) to continue hosting and managing it.  If a group of Glitches could gather in one area and bond together, as we have here, then the direction and development of nations in that area to continue the Glitch player civil, courteous, caring and sharing theme should be possible.
Still checking out other suggested games, and if I join NationStates, I'll use one of the links posted here. Thanks for sharing.

  • I've looked into it and it appears that you cannot "win" (or succeed or advance or prosper or whatever you want to call it) if you deviate from the agenda put forth by the author of the game. The further you get away from Liberal Democratic Socialists, the more trouble you will have building your nation. Yes, there are lots of choices but there is always only one right answer. The game is basically set up to indoctrinate the players into the political philosophy of the author.

Look at the table at the bottom of this page from the FAQ: http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Government_Category#Category_Map

The various categories are clearly presented, not as equally valid and interesting alternatives, but as right or wrong according to how closely they approach the Liberal Democratic Socialist ideal. The game is so blatantly biased that it seems to be much more of a teaching tool than a form of entertainment.

Who would want to play a game with only one correct path?

Not me! I am going to give Second Life a try. I am Belloc there; please look me up and say hi.

  • Well it is his site game...so obviously theres an influence....BUT...and this is a big but....the options you chose that affect your country are so bizarre theres no way to tell how your country will end up, and if you hadnt tried a few theres no way to know that. And in so there are no right answers ANY will affect your country somehow....and its pretty much impossible to know how ti will be affected.

  • I played NS back when it came out mumblemumble years ago, and you've gotten me to try it again. I'm going to see how long I can keep The Rogue Nation of Folivoria as a Scandinavian Liberal Paradise without it failing. I remember dictatorships being boringly easy to bring about.
