Gardening while dead (sowing while you reap?)

I noticed today that one time, well, I failed to notice that I'd run out of energy while tending my garden. And I had died. But I didn't go to hell immediately. I mean, I knew I should have. I knew I was supposed to go to hell go directly to hell. But I decided to finish tending the plot first. And then I clicked "Return to Game". And then I went to hell. But I was able to do a lot of gardening while dead.

  • Maybe that's saying something, like gardening is good for the soul :D

  • Kind of creepy too. A bit like digging your own grave

  • Over time there are going to be a bunch of ways you can interact with the game while not actually being in the game world (think mobile devices to access your house, etc). Gardening is one of these. Even though you 'died' in the game, because gardening is technically a sort of 'out-of-game' activity, you are still able to garden while dead. At least that's how it is now... we may change that in the future ;)

  • does this mean there are no plans to actually play from the phone?

  • Well... maybe we can think of it a little optimistically and say that they're planning to make the "mobile version" as a "half game" for now, and they might extend it to a full version later on when they have more time? ^^

  • I doubt they'll ever get the full functionality of Glitch into a mobile platform.

The quality of a phone screen (apart from iPhone 4) doesn't really do the Glitch world justice either.

I guess the best we can hope for is a Farmville like app? Limited functionality but the essentials are there? :)

  • What's so complex about Glitch that they can't get on a mobile platform? o.o

  • Little interface menus, the interactive items and socialising would be hard on such a small screen. They would do a great job I'm sure, but just not the full functionality.

I guess it would be more suited for a tablet platform, like the iPad. Ohh, Glitch running on an Ipad would be amazing.

  • Well, even on a small screen you can probably cover the screen with a translucent menu. The spatial organization of the buttons is actually rather well suited for it.

After all, you (often) won't have to look at the rest of the world for the few seconds you have with menus open.

One change that should be made though is that menus have to be brought up by some tap and hold or something. Maybe when you tap and hold, everything under your finger will get selected and fan out (the actual people and objects should fan out--it'll look cool!). You then slide your finger to the thing you meant to tap on and release, and then everything snaps back into place as the menu fades in. ^^

With the iDevices, maybe you can move by two finger dragging the screen and jump by tapping the screen with a third finger? ^^

Soo... menu: 1 finger. Movement: 2 fingers. Jump: 3 fingers. ^^

  • ^ Once I think about it, yes, the UI on the menus does lend itself to small screen interfaces.

Whilst moving around, to save clutter, all that would be on the screen is the scrolling surroundings, other players, energy/mood (and perhaps minimap?). Those are all the things you actually look at whilst moving around. Tapping on the bottom of the screen would bring up your backpack (that would slide up as a hovering translucent menu from the bottom), rock, XP and minimap (?).

But think about how you hold a device. Lets say iPod Touch/iPhone. You hold the back and all you have available is your thumbs. Using two fingers would be very uncomfortable unless holding the device with one hand.

I'd say a swipe & hold motion, starting from familiar, towards the left or right side of the screen, would be to move. A tap with the other finger on the other side of the screen whilst moving to jump. Tapping an object to bring up a menu. Tapping the bottom of the screen to bring up backpack etc. :)
