Goodnight, Groddle

I think that when the game goes away, all of our little world is asleep and waits for us till we come back again.

So I wrote this lullaby.  It's based on a song from my alma mater called "The Goodnight Song."
I hope it makes some of you happy too.  I like thinking that Ur is gently dreaming.

=================
Lay your picks and scrapers down,
Catch the fading evenlight,
Butterflies rest in the fruit trees
as we sing to Ur, "good night."

Fireflies glimmer, glimmer 'round all
Shimla Mirch and back to you
Bearing sparks from all the Glitchen
Cosma, Tii and Friendly too.

To be woven in our dreaming
Good night Groddle, good night.

  • When I read the text of the song, it didn't ring a bell, but when I heard the mp3 this morning, the melody seemed familiar.  Different schools' songs are often the same melodies with new words, but I couldn't remember any lyrics to this one.  I looked around for a while, and eventually found what may be the original song, printed in The Mount Holyoke, Volume 12, 1902-1903, and written by Alice Von Stein, probably a member of the class of 1905.  Here it is, as a matter of historical interest:

    A GOOD NIGHT SONG

    Gwine tow sleep, youh lill' darky,
      Cuddle down, youh sleepy head;
    Buggah-man an' haunts ken't git youh
      In youh lill' trundle-bed.

    Jes a'cause youse brack, ma honey,
      Dat's no sign dat God don' care.
    Laws!  He lubs us niggahs shu'ly,
      He am watchin' eberywhere.

    In de dark night, still an' lonely,
      Brack an' white am same tow Him;
    He can't see a bit ob diffrunce
      'Twix' Marse Tom an' lill' Jim.

    Go tow sleep, youh lill' darky,
      Shet youh shiny eyes up tight,
    Stars am twinklin' in de heben,
      Blinkin' tow youh, "Jim, good night."

    Unfortunately, only the lyrics were published, not the music.  By enormous contrast, the class of 1999 published these lyrics on their web site:

    Robed in sunset, curtained round
    by the deep'ning even light
    stands our well-loved alma-mater
    while we sing our soft good night

    (chorus)
    night winds whisper, whisper softly
    'round the world and back to you
    bearing gently from your daughters
    hopes and dreams and memories true
    to be woven in our singing
    Good night Holyoke, good night

    Days of doing press upon us
    days of striving for your fame
    so at twilight here we gather
    whisper to the winds your name

    (Chorus)

    IMHO, Lelu's version is clearly the best.  :)  The song is most likely not under copyright protection by this point, but it's hard to tell.  I'll do some more research tomorrow and post whatever I find.

    ETA: didn't see Yeoman's post when I posted this.  I'm still trying to determine the source of the music.

  • trumpets maybe could signal the start of something?

    the trumpets sound a bit like the "Reveille" wake up bugle call.

  • @Lelu - I wonder! I was an English major, so if she took many lit classes I bet we've at least met in passing. There are a couple of other Mohos around that I know of, though I don't think they've done much more than dabble - so far, anwyay.

  • When the game goes live 24/7 will we still have a way to hear the goodnight groddle close down song? If possible could we please have a way to end our play session hearing it.
    Posted 13 years ago by Faereluth Subscriber! | Permalink
  • Beautiful! It's almost a shame the game won't have any more shutdowns once it goes live. Maybe the song will have to be added to a music cube or something.
