Way to temporary block some player interactions

I know the idea of an MMORPWTFG is to be social with others.  But sometimes you don't want to be the complete extrovert.

There are times when I just want to go out and play the game, without having to worry about other players chasing me around (and around) so they can hug/moon/kiss me with their Emo-bears or give me a ray of sunshine with their Rainbows of Love or whateverthehellitiscalled (sorry), or have them give me things.

I know that these folks are either trying to be friendly and/or completing a quest or badge.  I get that.  But I'd also like a way to be able to set a preference that tells the other player(s), when they try to Emo/Rainbow/Give at me, "Sorry, $PLAYER is not accepting gifts right now.  Thanks anyway!"

There are times I'm happy to be helpful to others, whether on chat channels or to be the recipient they need for their quest or badge or just good deed of the day.  But, please, how about making it be able to STOP sometimes.

(or a food or drink that makes it stop for 10 minutes. or something. Please, I'm beggin' ya here... :-)

Less-than-three,
Moose

[p.s. I did not bite your sister once.  But if you ask nicely, I might bite you.]

  • Can we have an anti-social emo-bear to cancel out emo-bear interactions? XD

  • I think this could be a fun idea! Mebbe we could carry a big "Get off my Lawn!" Sign or.. um yeah

  • I'd much rather have a preference where emo bear animations didn't show up on your screen. You could still get the text but not the big animation and from the perspective of the other player nothing will have changed.

  • There's something to be said for a stealth or DND mode. But it is tricky to implement: invisible to whom, under what circumstances, for what kinds of interactions? Worth considering, though.

  • Supporting this idea.

  • Having an option to possibly turn off seeing certain animations is one thing. However it seems more like this is a request to turn off ALL interactions period. If its bothering you, there's no reason you cant shut the chats off and craft many, many items in your house.

  • Er, to craft items in your house you need items and ingredients. You have to get them from somewhere.  Not everything is available in one's backyard... unless perhaps you're level 40 or so. :-)

  • Its a great idea, and since there is already code to handle "oops didn't work", this would be fairly easy to do.

  • In the same vein could we also get dice rolling, Sparkle Powder and Sneeze Powder actions turned off as well? That would save many a Glitch from frustration of lag and crashes due to such actions.

  • I think an Invisible Mode would be a good solution: a preference that allows you to play invisibly. No other player can see you or interact with you, you don't appear in chat friend lists or locations, chat is disabled entirely for you, and you can't interact with other players either. There are times when we just want to play--without being available to other players against our will, without being bothered or distracted by the social side.

  • I can see the point, but, I don't have a sister!  Well, I have a sister-in-law.  So, you did or did not bite her??  Wow, I am not sure what to say about that!
I'll just say that +1 is where I'm at for now.  I actually like the invisible mode idea.  I am, however, getting less awkward around other players and am not sure I want this upgrade now as much as I would have needed it before.  Still, don't bite me!

  • +1 for an invisible mode! :)

  • +1 for the option of removing some animations (dice rolling in particular makes my computer lag central)
-1 for invisible mode. Part of Glitch's appeal to me is the way everyone interacts with one another. (And yes, I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, but interaction is a huge part of the game.) Making it so that anyone can remove themselves from that, I don't know. There have been days where I've just wanted to play and not talk to anyone, but I know that if there had been the option to stay mainly invisible, I probably would have used that more or less all the time, and I wouldn't have met 90% of the people I have on Glitch. The experience would have been very different. I feel that right now there's just enough of a mix between "forced" socialisation and doing whatever you want to somehow work, and I feel introducing a no-social mode would mess that up. Just my 2¢.

  • My bad :) I don't know the OP at all. But I bestowed an RK on him today in Pinnan Glimpse.
I just saw the "dot" and hit "bestow". His name was new to me.
    I just opened this thread.
    I'm sorry. Coincidence? Absolutely.

I actually am in favour of stealth mode of play for players who want it. Especially those with limited time to play or bad lag. If no one knows you're there, how can they be offended? (But it should work both ways - no stealth actions from the invisible player.)

  • hmm.. sounds like we are imagining a parallel universe where we are the only player in our version of ur.. but  what would happen if you were invisible and wanted to gather quoin or other limited resources? A player in regular mode would be standing there, getting ready to harvest, and suddenly the jellisacs would disappear, or the high level quoin would vanish? Sounds a bit confusing for the visible players..

  • FWIW, I never wanted an invisible mode, and I don't really like the idea. I don't want to stop all interactions with people. I just want to not get hit by the RK and the StupiBears, sometimes.

  • @ tuqui - Yes, you're right. No invisible play - maybe a "DND" (Do Not Disturb) sign over their head - like afk? Any actions like RK would say "player is DND".

  • +1 To the possibility of turning off some animations.
-1 To "Invisible Mode" and Moi.....i agree, i think it would greatly change the atmosphere of the game a lot, and not to its benefit.

  • I definitely like the idea of temporarily turning off player interactions. In my case, it's for entirely pragmatic reasons like, say, achieving death in Cebarkul. Being hit with random kindness in said location while mere points from death is annoying enough; explicitly asking that it not be done again and having the same glitch repeat the action led me to block that player. Right now, there is no medium between asking nicely and full out blocking; temporarily disabling non-consensual interaction would help fill that gap for me.

Of course in this particular example I could've just died on my lonely, post market-adjustment homestreet. The point (for me) is that non-consensual interactions can be antithetical to my current in game activity. The current system is effectively without recourse in any case where the interactions in question prove problematic.

  • I know this hasn't been responded to in a week, but I'd love to throw my support for at least being able to turn off the bear animation.  It's very kind of people to high-five me!  But it lags me really badly, and often I have to reload to recover.  The moon action is the worst, and will crash my flash 1 out of 3 times.  (And Sneeze powder is similar, if not quite as bad).

  • I would also like to be able to turn off the new high-powered radiation energy boost. In the past, people who came to Cebarkul to die and get mourned might be slightly inconvenienced by a friendly helpful person with radiation or an RK rainbow. But now Cebarkul is a gathering place for high-powered people whose game-play is showering all in the street with the new radiation energy, thousands of energy points in less than a minute.

  • I'm in favor of turning off animations due to lag issues. I'm not in favor of the effect that those actions have being turned off though. So say someone (Hugs / RK / Sparkle powder / Sneezing Powder) etc. then it still says in local that they did so if you had the animations turned off, and it still does what it does you just don't see the animations for it. Also put a simple indication above ppls heads whenever an animation is performed that one cannot see. All of these things are parts of the game, at times do people over do it, yes they do, but if you turn off how things affect you and not just the animations, it makes things not equal, if one Gltich turns this off but not that off, and that in turn can lead to both strife and confusion. Aside from that, theres really only 3 reasons to go to Hell, Exploring, Wine of the Dead, and Tomatoes, and Wine and Tomatoes are easy enough to get from other players if thats what you need. If you want to make sure you die theres always no-no. Do ppl gather in Cerbarkul to die, yes, is this the only option for dying...no, also whenever a street gets over crowded it becomes a nightmare lag wise, as the game gets more populated , and eventually comes out of Beta, ppl will need to have many places to gather, not just one, and the world is vast. SO its best not to think of any street as the only gathering place.

  • I agree that having those animations turned off sometimes would be nice, if only to save my poor laptop. My work computer and desktop do okay, but the laptop just dies spectacularly when something like that happens. As in, sometimes I need to restart the entire machine. There's no reason to tell the other person, "Hey they've got this turned off", because that sounds a bit rude, but I agree with not needing to SEE it every time.

  • i'm in favor of an invisible mode, big time!

i have my gmail open all day but am always invisible - if i want to chat with people i will, and those that are closest to me know they can ping me and i'm usually there. there are some people i think would like glitch, but i haven't invited them because i don't need or want them to know when i'm on all the time. i'm a social person when i'm out, but when i'm in game i just want to...well, be in game. (i'm also certain i'd get tired of "wow, you play that game a lot" after the first five times i'd hear it IRL.)

however, if they see me in game, i have no problem with emo bears, kindnesses, and other interactions.
