Unfortunately, desks not big enough to do any real work on are a common thing. This one building at my university has the tiniest desks... it also happens to be the building I have the most classes in. ><
Amen, Justin... all the desk-chair combos at my university have these miniscule slabs at such a degree that anything you put on it slides right off, and they're packed in tighter than airplane seats. It really sucks when you're carrying your backpack, maybe a purse (or equipment bag, or whatever else), a coffee, and trying to organize your book and your notepaper for lecture. No idea who to talk to about getting better desks, either...
